Translation Talk: Would you rather be happy or blessed?

by 73Bookworm

Although it’s been several months since the Church started using the new translation of the Roman Missal at Mass, I still stumble at the same place every time.  No, I’m not one of those who’s yelling out “and also with you,” instead of “and with your spirit!”  For me, it’s that I cannot wrap my mind or voice around the phrase, “Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof. . .”

Recently one of our school parents asked Father Dennis the meaning behind this “enter under my roof” change.  His confusing response was that this new wording echoes the Gospel more emphatically than the old translation.  Say what?  To understand this answer, I found out you have to be familiar with the story of Jesus and the centurion, which I was not.  It’s really worth checking out Matthew (8:5-10, 13) to understand what Father Dennis was talking about and to make this new response more meaningful.

I also discovered this interesting video of Father James Martin discussing the change from “happy” to “blessed” that occurs just prior to my stumbling block.  Click Happy are the Massgoers to check it out.

Is there a wrong way to read the Bible?

by 73Bookworm

The short answer is “yes, if you’re Catholic!”  I’m someone who likes to do things right.  Frankly, if I can’t do something well, I’d rather not do it all.  When I set out to read all 73 books of the Bible, I had a lurking suspicion that there would be a “right” way and a “wrong” way to go about this, according to the Catholic Church.
